Rules for the 2010 Composition Competition

Art. I
Composers of any nationality aged 40 or under (born after January 1, 1970) are eligible. The jury may consider slight exceptions to this rule.

Art. II.1
The Gianni Bergamo Classic Music Award announces for 2010 a competition for a composition for orchestra intended for a young audience (children and young people aged 6-12 years).
In addition to standard orchestral instruments (see Art. II.3), a maximum of 2 non-musical interpreters can be included (for example: actor, voice, mime, magician, clown.)
Electronics and video may not be used.

Art. II.2
The piece should be least 20 and maximum 40 minutes long. The work in question may have been performed already, but it must not have won any awards.

Art. II.3
The work must use a least 30 musicians from the orchestra listed below, which represents the maximum possible instruments that can be used:
2 flutes (second also piccolo)
2 oboes (second also English horn)
2 clarinets (second also bass clarinet and/or piccolo clarinet)
2 bassoons (second also contrabassoon)
2 horns
2 trumpets
1 timpanist
1 percussionist
8 violins I
8 violins II
5 violas
4 violoncellos
3 double basses

It is possible to add two additional musicians (instrumental, not soloists).

Art. II.4
If a text is used, it must be in one of the following languages: Italian, German, French, English or Spanish. The composer must supply the authorisation of the editor or of the author for the use of the text at public performances. If the piece is among the winners, a translation into Italian (made by the Competition Office) must be possible. The composer must be available (without payment) for any possible changes and/or adjustments of the music.


Art. III
Applications must be sent to:

and be received by the Competition Office not later than August, 20 2010 (date of receipt).

The application must contain:
∑ the duly completed registration form;
∑ a photocopy of the participant’s passport;
∑ curriculum vitae in Italian or English (max. one A4 page);
∑ five copies of the dossier and possible recording, perfectly legible and without any indication of the author’s identity. The works must be marked with a pseudonym which must also appear on the envelope and the registration form but which does not indicate the first or last name of the author, otherwise he/she will be disqualified. The length of the work must be clearly stated on the first page.
∑ any comments about the work in Italian or English (max. one A4 page)

Art. IV
The members of the Jury are:

Marcello Parolini
Rebecca Saunders
Nadir Vassena

During the final round of the Competition, the Artistic Director of the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana (or a representative) will also be present as a consultant, without the right to vote but with veto power concerning the performance, if it is believed that the piece chosen by the jury is not suitable for performance by the above-mentioned orchestra.

The organizers reserve the right to substitute one or more jurors.

Art. V
Prizes: the jury will decide autonomously how to distribute the prize money of EUR 25'000. One or more prizes and honorary mentions are possible.
The jury reserves the right not to award the prizes.

Art. VI
The work awarded with the first prize will be performed by the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano (except for force majeure).
The winner shall, at his/her own expense, provide the competition office with all the material necessary for the performance within 45 days of receiving the award.
The composer retains the intellectual property rights to the work. However, each time the winning work is performed, recorded or printed, the following sentence must be included: “Winner of the Gianni Bergamo Classic Music Award 2010 – Composition”.

Art. VII
Any television or radio broadcasts or recordings made in connection with initiatives organized by the competition organizers are deemed to have been authorized by the composers without incurring any additional obligation for the organizers.

The participants shall consent to radio and television broadcasts and transmissions as well as to recordings on audio and video tape which may be made during the competition performances. Although they remain the owners of their works, the winners – as a result of entering the competition – waive the relevant rights to performances and productions connected with the Gianni Bergamo Classic Music Award Competition.

Authors bound by an exclusive contract to a publisher and/or recording company must include with their registration form a letter of exemption from said publisher and/or recording company relating to the composition submitted for the competition.

The competition organizers shall bear the costs of travel (up to a maximum of CHF 1,000 and according to agreements with the organizers), board and lodging for the winners.

Art. VIII
The results of the competition will be communicated to the winners not later than 15.11.2010

Art. IX
The decisions of the jury are final. Entry in the competition implies full acceptance of the jury’s decisions and of these regulations.

Art. X
The winning scores will not be returned. The remaining scores will be kept by the competition organizers for one year as of the date on which the results are announced and will be available to the authors, who shall arrange, at their own expense, to retrieve the scores against a signature that must match the signature on the envelope. After this date, the competition organizers shall no longer be responsible for keeping the scores and reserve the right to donate them to the library of the Swiss Italian Conservatory.

Art. XI
The organizers reserve the right to modify these regulations, and any changes will be communicated to the participants in due course.

Art. XII
In the event of any disputes, the notice of the competition in the Italian language shall be legally binding.
For matters not explicitly specified in this notice of the competition, we refer to the Swiss Legislation and specifically to the Swiss Code of Obligations and the laws governing the specific matter.
