Rules for the 2018 Competition for female voice (mezzo-soprano / contralto)

Art. I

Musicians of any nationality born in or after 1983 are eligible.

Art. II

a) Programme for the first round

Video recording uploaded on a private channel (e.g. youtube, vimeo, etc.), specifying on the enrolment form the direct link, place and date of the recording.

The recording must be integral (without cuts) and be not more than one year old. The repertoire must be original.

The candidate can freely choose the programme but it must include:

  • three or more pieces of different historic periods (period 1: 1600-1750, period 2: 1750-1830, period 3: 1830-1900, period 4: 1900-2018).

  • at least two different languages (the pieces must be sung in the original language)

  • pieces for voice and piano and/or voice solo.

The entire duration of the programme must be about 30-45 minutes.

b) Programme for the second round (semi-final)

The candidate will present a freely chosen programme including:

  • at least two Lieder (or similar)

  • at least one opera aria (or oratorio)

  • at least one piece from period 1 (see first round).

As in the first round, at least two languages must be included.

Duration of the programme: max 25 minutes.

During this round, the jury can request the performance of only one part of the chosen pieces.

Not more than two pieces chosen for the first turn can be repeated in the second turn.

The presented programmes are binding. Any changes must be approved by the jury.

c) Programme for the third round (final)

A concert programme of min 35 and max 45 minutes, without any breaks.

The choice is completely free, both for the kind (opera, operetta, Lied, etc.) and the period, but it must be built with a thematic project whose originality and consistency will be taken into consideration by the jury.

Official piano accompanists will be available free of charge for the second and third round. However, participants may bring their own piano accompanists at their own expense.

Art. III

Applications must be sent to:

and be received by the Competition Office no later than May 31, 2018 (date of receipt).

The applications must contain:

a) The duly completed registration online form

b) A black and white or colour photo of the applicant

c) A photocopy of the participant’s passport or another identity document

d) Curriculum vitae in Italian or English (max. one A4 page)

e) List of the teachers with whom the applicant has or had a continuing public or private didactic contact (see online form);

f) a video recording (in 4 copies) not older than one year (see Art. II)

g) programme of the competition (first, second and third rounds, see Art. II and online form)

Applications that do not completely fulfil the competition rules will be rejected. Documents and musical material sent will not be returned.

Art. IV

The members of the jury are:

The organizers reserve the right to substitute one or more jurors.

If a component of the jury has or had a didactic relationship in the two years before the beginning of the competition with one or more applicants, an internal rule will be used. In accordance to this rule, at the beginning of the jury session each member of the jury must write a declaration concerning any personal involvement with any participant of the competition.

The jury evaluates and selects the participants according to these rules and internal procedures, determined in harmony with the official rules.

The participants are not allowed to contact the jury members as long as they are in competition.

Art. V

1st prize: Euro 12’000

2nd prize: Euro 8’000

3rd prize: Euro 5’000

The jury reserves the right not to award the prizes or to assign them in a different way.

Art. VI

The winner of the first prize will have the possibility of performing at a concert as soloist coordinated by the competition organisation.

For this concert, no honorary will be given.

Art. VII

A sub – group of the jury will make the first selection. The results of the first round will be communicated around June 30, 2018. The decisions of the jury are indisputable, no justification will be given.

The applicants admitted to the competition will receive a written confirmation containing detailed information regarding the next rounds. Foreign participants needing a visa in order to enter Switzerland may apply for the visa using the above mentioned confirmation.

The admitted participants must supply 5 copies of the presented pieces.


The competition (2nd round – semi-final, and 3rd round – final) will take place in Lugano from September 3 to 5, 2018.

Each participant must personally check-in with a valid identity document at the competition desk on the day of his own performance and at the time which will be communicated to him no later than August 15, 2018.

The participants in the competition must be available during the whole period of time in which the competition is held. All participants must avoid any kind of professional engagement or concert for the entire duration of the competition (2nd and 3rd round).

Any applicant who, for any reason, takes part in the competition (regularly invited by the Competition Office) without satisfying all conditions of the competition rules, immediately looses the right to take part in the competition and to any refunds.

For all rounds of the competition, travel, room and board are at the expense of the participants.

The Organization can help with information and booking of accommodation.

Art. IX

The participants shall consent to radio and television broadcasts and transmissions as well as to recordings on audio and video tape being made during the competition performances without incurring any additional obligation for the organizers.

Art. X

The organizers reserve the right to modify these regulations, and any changes will be communicated to the participants in due course.

Art. XI

The decisions of the jury are final and binding. Entry in the competition implies full acceptance of the jury’s decisions and of these regulations.

Art. XII

The competition rules in the Italian language shall be legally binding.

For any details not included in these competition rules, the Swiss Code of Obligations (Codice svizzero delle obbligazioni) and the specific laws are binding.
